It was a perfect day for Spring hiking and 14 of us headed up Pilot Rock Road to the trailhead parking lot.
We started out together at the Pilot Rock TH to the intersection with the PCT. Elisabeth and Lynn took the PCT trail northward toward Pilot Rock and back, then explored the area down into the bowl for a view of Pilot Rock before returning via the trail back to the parked cars. The two hiked about 2½ miles.
Kay led the others down the PCT for a mile to the open vista towards California. Phlox, daggerpod, paintbrush, and other wildflowers were blooming in the open area. The group then returned up the PCT to the overlook for Pilot Rock. There were 5 fallen trees across the trail that we could easily climb over. We had excellent views of Mt. McLaughlin and then Mt. Shasta.
We had lunch looking up at Pilot Rock while a few vultures soared above. Some of us did an optional further hike about 0.5 miles on the PCT towards Porcupine Mt through a wooded area of the PCT. Total distance hiked was 5.0 miles or 6.0 miles with the extension. Elevation gain: 500’.
